Blog Merger

I just finished importing this blog into my main wargames blog. This leaves me with only one blog to update on a regular basis. I hope you will continue to read my fantasy adventures over on http://wargamer1972.blogspot.com/.

Campaign Map for 15mm Chronicles of Aeyr

After YEARS I finally have my starting map. This has been a major roadblock. I'll start things off with a series of battles between the Dwarfs of Ragnaheim and the Black Rock Clan Orcs.

Bazil Broketail - Battledragon of the Argonath.

I don't recall, not even the slightest, where I picked up this book and a few of more from the series. I started reading it and have loved it. Bazil is a battledragon and his companion is Relkin a dragonboy. A dragonboy is a human who has been assigned to assist, fight with and help care for his battledragon. At first it starts a little slow, but then picks up. Half-way through battles are being fought and they are well detailed and bloody.

So far the story has dragons, humans, elves, imps, trolls, evil men, wizards, witches and hints of long extinct or forgotten races that might possibly exist in the deep remote, like lionmen. After the first battle I had made my mind up to create an army of imps & trolls as well as battledragons and their allies.

Reaper Miniatures Bones - 15mm Dragons

These four superb dragons came with one of the Reaper KS Bones deals that I backed over the recent years. They are perfect for 6, 10 and 15mm models. I have already based them and will soon have them painted up and ready for war. I will post pictures of their progress.

Frostgrave: First Game

Today my son came to visit me for Father's Day and we played a test/first game of Frostgrave. We used 1/72 scale toy soldiers as we had plenty around. I used dwarfs, he had humans and we used skeletons for the Mausoleum scenario. All miniatures save 1 were Caesar Minis 1/72 hard plastics, James wizard was a plastic minis from a boardgame.

We played this first game as a cooperatvie game of us vs. them. We won quite quickly and tallied up the loot and experience. It was fun and we've decided off of this that we will pursue 28mm warbands. Model selection and details to come.  It was fun.

Frostgrave

Well the Frostgrave bug has bitten. One might call it "frostbite?" I'll be here all day. Anyhow I bought the book, read it, and like it. In fact I like it a lot. It checks a lot of boxes for me. I let my son read it and it's the first fantasy miniatures game that he is excited about in over a decade.

He is talking about fielding a chronomancer or necromancer. I am leaning towards the necromancer and the enchanter. We have no official Frostgrave models yet but most games I've seen are played with other makers anyway. We have plenty of Reaper models to scour through and quite a bit of boxed game models as well, like Descent and Talisman.  I will post pictures and more info later once we start the assembly process.

Game of Thrones - House Lannister Banner & Soldiers

I found this on eBay recently. It's a box set of GoT inspired 54mm toy soldiers. They require assembly like legos but they come fully painted.

Reaper Miniatures Warlord Game

I've known about this game for years but only recently began to take interest in it while searching for an alternate fantasy skirmish set of wargame rules. Well it's a bit late. Reaper continues to produce miniatures for the game but have stopped supporting the game. Shame too as it seems like a solid little game. I will start piecing together a warband and will post my pictures and progress here later on.

Warhammer Quest Adventure Card Game

My son stopped by for a visit yesterday and we broke open my new WQACG box set. I had excited about this game for a long time and was glad to see it on my doorstep last week. We both greatly enjoyed the Pathfinder ACG and thought that this would scratch our Warhammer Old World itch.

We played two games, the tutorial and the first quest. Game setup didn't take too long and is fairly spelled out for you. However from there on things get a bit muddled. We were left to trodge through the rules and cards without much guidance. The rulebooks should have been laid out better. You will find a topic which you have questions on only to be referred to a previous page or the tutorial book. Overall it felt that the game was left unfinished or was rushed to production. Perhaps a sign that quality control has dropped a bit since FFG was bought out.

The Warhammer flavor is there; along with splendid artwork. We really wanted to enjoy this game as we are both die hard old world fans. However the clunky mechanics and poorly laid out rules left us a bit let down. We will give it another go later on and see if there are any modifications we can make to clean it up a bit. I will report back here if when we do.

Warhammer - Ogre Kingdoms Tyrant WIP Part 2

My new OK Tyrant bits arrived today. I have glued on his new drinking horn, belly guard, club and head. As well as attaching his personal gnoblar attendants heads. Finally I glued them all down to their base.

Warhammer - Ogre Kingdoms Tyrant WIP Part 1

I had one extra OK Bull left from a recent eBay purchase. However it had a missing right hand weapon and no head. So I debated about finishing it off as a bull but I have plenty of those at present. However I am in need of a Tyrant and since those models are quite expensive and I already had half an ogre I decided to convert him.

A new Tyrant from GW is $40. The average price of a OK Tyrant on eBay is going for $25 to $40 USD with shipping costs added to the price. I did some bitz shopping and spent a total with shipping of $13.60. So that is about a 40% savings off of an eBay Tyrant and a huge savings from retail GW one.

So here is with his right hand cut off and his gut shield removed while he awaits his new parts.

Warhammer Rebasing

I've been rebasing my One Hour Warhammer armies the last few days. The Skaven are completely rebased but need to be flocked. The Orcs are rebased but I still need to paint up a few new units then flock them. I've added two units of boar riders, a chariot, a troll and another unit of warriors.

I am basing all my Warhammer models on 60mm frontage bases. I am adhering to the concept of keeping my armies small. I received 5 Ogre Kingdoms models in the mail today. 3 Bulls and 2 Belchers. I have all but one Bull rebased. The Ogres are so large they fit one model to a 60mm x 30mm base.

Currently in my model inventory I have models to fill all or some needs for the following Warhammer factions.

Lizardmen
The Empire
Ogre Kingdoms
Skaven
Tomb Kings
Night Goblins
Orcs
Dark Elves
Bretonnia
Vampire Counts
Chaos

Knights 5 (+2 HtH)
Unicorn Scout Riders 3 (+2 Shooting, 0 HtH)

One Hour Warhammer: Skaven Rule Changes

I am toying with some new rules for the Skaven. Here they are:

*Skaven shooters (including Warp Cannon) may fire into any unit of Clan Rats that are engaged in close combat with an enemy. All damage is marked equally on both combatants.

*Skaven Gutter Runners: May deploy at any table edge or terrain feature anytime after the first turn.

15mm Battle: Dwarfs vs Orcs.

I fought this battle back on the 7th so all the details are a bit sketchy now. Any way it was an enjoyable game. I used "One Hour Wargames" rules but reduced the hits a unit could take down to 10 each. I fielded 10 Orc units and 9 Dwarfs. The Orcs took first turn and advanced in hopes of sacking the dwarf hold. The battle went well and ended with a Dwarf victory.

The "Dwarf Hold" is a terrain feature from the Dragonriders of the Styx playset.

The Dwarfs line up to defend their hearth and hall.

Warg Riders lead the Orc advance.

Dwarf crossbows rain death upon advancing Orc scouts.

The Orc shaman throws a fireball at the advancing Dwarf unit.

This Dwarf Handgunner unit rolled a 1 in shooting. Which meant they caused 1 further casualty and are now out of ammo.

The Dwarf Thane leads the Dwarf Axe unit as it finishes off the unit of Black Orcs.
